With extensive experience in recording and mixing across nearly every musical genre and studio imaginable, Michael Stern has recorded and mixed over 260 film scores and worked on dozens of records.

Michael Stern, C.A.S., is a Music Producer, Engineer, and Scoring Mixer based in Los Angeles with a career spanning back to 1982, during which he has worked in professional recording studios around the world. Michael Stern has recorded and mixed approximately 260 film scores, including notable titles such as Iron Man 2, Sex And The City 1 and 2, Dumb And Dumber To, August: Osage County, The Notebook, and most recently, the #1 Amazon Prime film, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. He has experience at every Los Angeles scoring stage as well as Abbey Road Studios in London.
In addition to film, Michael Stern is actively involved in TV and Record Productions, contributing to dozens of TV shows and records. He has authored technical articles for The A & R Registry and Film Music Magazine for two decades. As of April 2024, he serves as the New Toys / New Gear Editor for Music Connection Magazine, where he evaluates and reviews new audio software, hardware, and musical instruments, publishing four articles a month. Michael is a member of IATSE MPEG Local 700, NARAS, AFM Local 47, and The Cinema Audio Society. In his spare time, he participates in charity fundraising, acting as an event producer for “The Get Together Foundation,” where he has helped raise $2 million for Los Angeles charities focused on supporting people experiencing homelessness, as well as The City Of Hope Hospital and Musicares.
Michael Stern was also featured in July 2020 Mix Magazine and December 2020 Music Connection Magazine for his work on Diane Warren’s Oscar-nominated song, “I’m Standing With You,” which raised over $7 million for The United Nations-World Health Organization Covid-19 relief fund. His latest projects include mixing records for the 60’s #1 Band, Strawberry Alarm Clock, “Blues Travels Fast” by Michael Allman, Gregg Allman’s first-born son, and “Thank You, Mister Rogers: Music & Memories,” a multi-artist tribute to the late Fred Rogers.
With extensive experience as an educator and guest speaker, Michael Stern began teaching Pro Tools in the Film and Television Major at CSUN in Fall 2023 and continues into 2024. In 2003, he was a guest speaker at the renowned SXSW (South By Southwest Music Conference), sharing the panel with Pharrell Williams as a recording expert. In 2002, he hosted a Master Class at Ball State College in Muncie, Indiana, leading the recording department in capturing The Ball State Symphony Orchestra in a Hollywood-style recording-scoring session. As the Recording Technology Columnist and Editor for Film Music Magazine at its inception, Michael participated as a speaker for dozens of Hollywood Film Scoring industry educational and networking events.
As an early adopter of digital recording technology, Michael Stern has provided private instruction in Pro Tools and Digital Performer, mentoring many engineers and musicians who have gone on to have award-winning careers.
Michael owns The Mix Lab West, a recording studio in Chatsworth, CA, featuring 5.1 Surround and Stereo Mixing, and serves as the Chief Engineer at Rock Cellar Studios, which boasts a 32’ by 22’ tracking/recording area with a Trident 88 analog console. A graduate of the world-renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, Michael Stern was a double major in guitar and Music Production and Engineering. His graduating class of 1985 was the very first for the MP&E major, comprised of a unique group of graduates, most of whom continue to thrive in the music industry.

The recording features an arrangement created by singer, vocal coach, and producer Ken Stacey (Elton John, Michael Jackson, Ambrosia), putting a unique spin on this timeless holiday tune known and loved by all.

More than 170 musical artists from six continents around the world have joined together to create a music video of the Oscar nominated original song “I’m Standing With You” written by iconic songwriter Diane Warren, which will be in support of the United Nations Foundation’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organization (WHO). The arrangement of the song is by Emmy nominated TV/Film/Concert composer Sharon Farber who along with the video’s award-winning director Gev Miron, worked together in collaboration to produce the video.
This wonderful rock band from S. Korea recently recorded with Michael Stern at his studio in Los Angeles. According to lead singer Isaac, aka Richiman, this kind of recording is not possible where they live.
